How I felt while I was in the exhibition hall and the disclosure that I got some answers concerning myself about the kind of craftsmanship that grabs my eye. At the point when I showed up at the National Gallery of Art, the outside structure of the structure blew my mind. From outside taking a gander at the historical center its size simply astounded me. The large tall stone segments and the rock steps helped me to remember antiquated Greek design. When I made it up the marble flight of stairs I at long last showed up inside the exhibition hall. At the point when I got inside the gallery I had entered from the back and I needed to stroll to the data work area. On my way to the data work area I check out the historical center to se in the event that anything on that floor got my attention. The sculpture in the historical center got my I since it was a lovely wellspring and the sound of the water coming out of the sculpture made me imagine that it was delightful. In the wake of taking a gander at the wellspring I advanced toward the data work area to get a guide and a rundown of the visits that were going on that day. I investigated the rundown and chose to go on the John Singer Sargent visit. At the point when I showed up at the National Gallery of Art there where a variety of visits that I could have went on. I concluded that I needed to go on the John Singer Sargent Tour since I had found out about him and a portion of his works while doing my cut-out assortment. I additionally needed to see a portion of his work since they were imagined in the Baltimore Sun. The works of art that were in the Baltimore Sun that I really got the chance to see very close was the Madame X and Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. These two artistic creations in the sun were simply high contrast photographs however in the exhibition hall their excellence was mind boggling and furthermore there size was amazing. I needed to sit tight in line for around 40 minutes before the visit began and it kept going about an hour Id state. The main artwork that you see when you are on the visit is the Madame X. Madame X is likely the painting that Sargent is generally renowned for. In the artistic creation Madame Gautreau position and provocative dress were believed to be flighty and astounding. Madame Gautreau mother needed Sargent to remove from his show since she felt that the artistic creation was to provocative. The other artistic creation that was in the Baltimore Sun that I saw was Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. This composition was Sargents perfect work of art, during the time of workmanship know as impressionism. He caught the impact of nightfall with the fake light of flame lamps as the light reflected off the essences of the two kids in this work of art. .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 , .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .postImageUrl , .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .focused content territory { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 , .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:hover , .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:visited , .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:active { border:0!important; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; progress: murkiness 250ms; webkit-change: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:active , .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:hover { haziness: 1; progress: mistiness 250ms; webkit-change: murkiness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relat ive; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content embellishment: underline; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; outskirt range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-fringe span: 3px; content adjust: focus; content adornment: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: total; right: 0; top: 0; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u933 92ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881 .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u93392ac764453e42bdd89cae81d01881:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: The Annotated Mona Lisa Part 4a: The Rebirth of Art: RenaissanceThere were more works of art that were on this visit however the ones I discussed were the ones that I was generally inspired by. A portion of different bits of craftsmanship that were in plain view were Fumee dambre gris 1880, Sortie de legilse1882, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit1882, Enna and Betty, Daughters of Asher and Mrs. Wertheimer1901, Lord Ribblesdale1902, On the Grand Canal1907, Palmettos1917, Two Girls in White Dresses1909-1911and Nonchaloir1911. In general I felt that the visit was educational and furthermore lovely. I like generally all of Sargents artistic creations. After the visit was over I continued to stroll around the remainder of the exhibition hall. I came pretty much a wide range of craftsmanship that I truly didnt like. I went over some scriptural artistic creations and they just didnt do anything for me. I likewise went over pictures of a portion of the presidents. They were alright yet they just didnt have the magnificence that I was searching for. I later found the excellence that I was searching for when I went over a room in the gallery that was loaded up with scene artworks. I surmise I made sense of then that, that was the kind of workmanship that I like. I likewise came to deduction this since I love to be outside lasting through the year. I simply love nature and all that Mother Nature brings to the table. All in all I had an awesome time at the historical center. Since it was the first occasion when I have been as a grown-up I expected a great deal from the exhibition hall and the historical center made a fine showing in performing up to my desires and much more. From the outset in the exhibition hall I didnt feel genuine good since I didnt truly realize what's in store. However, as the time passed while I was in the exhibition hall I grew progressively agreeable and when I left I felt quite great about myself since I had taken in a ton in class and didnt feel like a nitwit like I figured I would. In the gift you posed the inquiry would you go to an exhibition hall again on the off chance that it werent required? Well toward the start of the semester I would have let you know not in a million years however now I would have o disclose to you that I would. I had a great encounter since I think about the kinds of workmanship in the exhibition hall and furthermore a portion of the pieces I had as of now really observed.

Remarkable Business Lessons from Billionaires That Can Add Value to Your Life
Remarkable Business Lessons from Billionaires That Can Add Value to Your Life Inspiration is powerful. Inspiration is actionable advice. If success has been avoiding you, itâs quite easy to give in to defeat. But guess what? what if we were to tell you that every successful person that youâve ever idolized has gone through the same route as you except when the bridge of defeat showed up, they cut across and made it to the other side. The other side of the bridge is filled with success, wealth, fame, wisdom, and knowledge. Are you ready to forgo all these things just because you are unable to overcome your current situation? Billionaires have shared their success stories, and therefore make excellent role models for young and upcoming entrepreneurs looking for the right bit of motivation to get them that competitive edge. THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A ROLE MODEL IN OUR LIVESImagine being able to walk down a road when youâve just fractured your leg. Impossible, isnât it? Now, try walking with a pair of crutches on either side of you. Suddenly, the impossible walk doesnât look so hard to achieve. Similarly, our mental state depletes itself of positive energy and is unable to think out of a difficult situation. In these times, a role model becomes the crutches to our mind and help us achieve our goals without quitting. A role model is somebody we can look up to and emulate their success. We try and understand how they managed to get past from a difficult situation and make a blueprint of their life as our own to replicate. In this way, finding success isnât far away.Every Successful Person Has Their Own Role ModelWhen we were kids, we would look at our moms cook and when they werenât around, our naughty hands would reach for the kitchen knife and try to recreate the dish while making a mess in the kitchen. As humans, weâve all considered our parents as our role models while growing up. Likewise, when we grow up we look up to successful figures that achieved fame, success, and wealth such as Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates as our role models.Every role model has their own role model and so forth. Letâs take Bill Gates, for example, a report mentioned Mr. Gates referring to Warren Buffett as an influential figure in his life and how he clarified his business vision while using Warren Buffetâs decision-making process. Thatâs right! Every successful person has their own role model, even Warren Buffett had his own role model â" Benjamin Graham, his mentor. Do you see where we are going with this? Thereâs a pattern with successful people and how they emulate their role models into achieving their goals. Learn from their Mistakes Even successful people make mistakes early in their careers. Take Warren Buffet for example, in the early 1960s, Mr. Buffet invested an undisclosed amount in a textile business that he famously termed as a â$200 billion-dollar blunderâ. He stated that this decision was the worst decision of his life and had he invested in any good insurance company at the time, it would have been âworth twice the valueâ.But this mistake alone didnât stop Mr. Buffet from becoming one of the wealthiest people in the world. In fact, trial and error is part of life. Without investing in different stocks, he wouldnât have understood how to streamline his stock options and hence, wouldnât have tasted the same level of success as today.Another famous name, Richard Branson of Virgin Group launched a series of brands that didnât really live up to the mark. Virgin Cola was launched to compete with Coca-Coca and it fell flat on its face. Next, he came up with Virgin Cosmetics which primarily focused on beauty products, and homeware, it was sold after a commercial failure. Branson also dabbled in wedding products and automobiles but even these brands were soon a marketing disaster in terms of revenue growth. While itâs easy for us to assume that the richest of the rich have lived perfect lives and have made the perfect choices during their careers, the truth is much furth er away than you think. The more successful you are, the more the pressure of living up to these expectations and hence, a higher chance of failure. Become the Best Version of YourselfâYou are what you are today because of the choices you made yesterday, and the choices you make today will make you what you are tomorrow.â â" Michael JosephsonThe biggest enemy that stops us from achieving success and chasing our goals is ourselves. We usually prefer shortcuts instead of learning the process, we prefer self-destruction to self-preservation, and we certainly like to put off things for tomorrow instead of doing them today. All these negative thoughts hinder us from achieving the best form of ourselves that we aim to be in the future. To change this negative idea into a positive one, we need to start at the very core of our thoughts. Letâs start with a simple self-improvement exercise by understanding yourself. First, get yourself a voice recorder, you can use your phone if you like. Now, glance through the questions below and speak into your tape recorder in an orderly fashion. Ensure the answers are well-detailed, donât worry about stammering or being perfect, just concentrate on your thoughts. If it helps you can keep your eyes closed to visualize your answers. Letâs begin!1. Whatâs the most important thing in the whole world to me? 2. Is it worth changing myself into a better version of me to achieve this important vision?3. What prevents me from achieving this dream? 4. Is there anyone out there that can help me achieve this dream?5. What would life be like without achieving this dream?6. What kind of life would I lead if this dream is achieved?7. What scares me the most about myself?8. What is my strongest feature?9. On a scale of 1-10, how committed am I to achieving this dream?10. Am I willing to accept guidance for self-improvement if given the option?By recording your answers, you create an audible version of your thoughts for replayabilit y. Play this recording every day when you wake up and remind yourself of your lifeâs goals and why you need to be focused for the rest of the day. We promise in a monthâs time, youâll begin to witness a drastic self-improvement. While many people arenât comfortable in hearing their own voice, this exercise aims to bring out the answers that you arenât going to share with anyone but yourself. These hidden thoughts are the reason you are blocking your mind and passion from communicating with each other. Whether the reasons are jealousy, envy, greed, anger, laziness, etc. the answers are clear to you. Motivate Yourself to Overcome FailureA study conducted by Adam McCaffrey on âhow fear of failure affects individualsâ brought out stunning results. As previously believed, the study proved that there was a strong link between people who feared failure and those that procrastinated a lot during the day. Another hypothesis that Adam revealed in this study was the fact that pe ople with low energy levels had no reason to try further beyond giving up and facing defeat against failure. Many of the statistics were collected from college students belonging to undergraduates and graduate levels. This study proves that fear of failure is planted right from an academic level and that every year students come out of universities without the right mindset to guide them into being self-determined individuals. So how do we change this negative mindset when we step out of our colleges thinking of ourselves as incompetent individuals? Simple, we should aim to reflect on the lives of successful people and try to mirror their qualities. We must know that every successful person has had a long journey and at the start of that journey, they were exactly in our shoes â" young and incompetent. With this thought, we can begin to feel relieved that we too can achieve success and thereâs nothing to stop us from heading in the same successful direction as our role models. To begin with, here are a few ground rules you should follow.Donât try to please everyone, itâs alright to be disliked but itâs more important that you believe in yourselfDonât attack others with a different opinion than yourself, your idea isnât the absolute truth and shouldnât be treated like oneIf you feel like a âdoormatâ with your present group of friends. Stop hanging out with them and choose a positive group to hang out withAlways speak your mind out, no matter how uncomfortable you are. Itâs great to be a âyes-manâ, but occasionally do say âNoâ when you feel the need toDonât put off something for tomorrow what can be done today. Remember, for every minute you waste, someone else in the world is doing something productive in that same timeframe. Time is money.Nice people donât always have to finish first. But society prefers a humble ârunner-upâ than a selfish winner.INVALUABLE BUSINESS LESSONS FROM BILLIONAIRES THEMSELVES1. Good Things Come to Those Who Wait â" Amancio Ortega (Zara)As far as retail shops go, Amancio Ortega is the wealthiest retailer in the world with a famous retail brand thatâs popular the world over â" Zara. Ortega had his humble beginnings when he started delivering packages for a local clothing store and from there on he went on to become the owner of the biggest fashion empire in the world. Itâs time to stop and ask yourself a few questions â" Did Ortega become a billionaire because he was fortunate to find work early on? Or did he have a set of rules that he followed that made him what heâs today? While a lot of people believe in lady luckâs touch having her way with billionaires and their fortunes. Itâs quite further than the actual truth. Here are 5 life lessons shared by the fashion baron himself. Even Introverts are liable to become billionairesIf you thought you need to socialize with people and get out more often to get rich, think again. Ortega had famously stated, âYou must a ppear three times in the local newspaper â" when youâre born, when youâre married, and when you die.â He doesnât spend time with the press as often as youâd expect a billionaire to. Ortega demonstrates that to succeed you donât have to be a social person. Never forget your rootsIf you were a billionaire, which part of the world would you like to be in? Rome, Greece, Switzerland, Mauritius, etc.? Ortega has stayed in the same hometown for a long time â" A Coruña, Galicia which is in Spain. To think the man has it made in every aspect of his life and still chooses to never leave his hometown. In fact, his empire was built in this very place with his first shop being opened in the city and he has stuck to his roots even to this day.Never too lateIf you thought you were trudging through your 30âs and the end of life is just ahead, think again. Ortega was 40 when he founded Zara. Let that sink in for a little bit. If you think dreams of being a billionaire were only rese rved to the twenty-something youngsters and that the rest of us in our thirties and forties should retire, Ortega is here to show us the way that life isnât âlights outâ till the old lady sings it. Good things come to those who waitYou really didnât think that Ortega founded Zara and the next morning he was rolling in a billion dollars, did you? It took him a whole decade for Ortega to start the primary holding company of Zara â" Inditex. It was then he opened his very first shop. With patience comes success. Take a step back and look at what you can do. Donât rush through life and make hasty decisions. A single thoughtful decision will lead you to success over 100 rushed decisions.Remain humbleWhile it may sound like a cliché, Ortega believed success came to those that were humble. Ortega continues to dine at the same coffee shop that he used to years ago. He has a moderate dressing sense for a fashion conglomerate. He believes that humility helps with dealing with anxi ety and to become better visionaries for his workers. Itâs not wrong to show off your wealth or to flash your expensive car in public, but when itâs time to work, itâs important to have self-control and be willing to assist others.2. Failure and Mistakes Are Very Valuable â" Bill Gates (Microsoft)Bill Gates held the title of the worldâs richest man from 1995 to 2017. He was the undisputed king of all billionaires for more than 2 decades. Most of his wealth was made from his famous operating system â"MS-DOS which went to be named as the famed Windows in 1985 that changed the way the world saw personal computing. Here are 5 life lessons from the genius billionaire himself. Feed your mind knowledgeGates believed in the power of books and even though he was a computer software entrepreneur, he rarely used electronic devices in his home and would immerse himself in reading. He believed that reading would open a world of creativity and through creativity, you can inspire yoursel f to build something thatâs truly special to you. Be DisciplinedThe modern world prefers instant gratification instead of coming up with a disciplined approach. We prefer to munch on junk food because itâs easy to acquire, we prefer to sit on our couches and watch television for hours on end, we even prefer to create shortcuts to our problems instead of finding a solution for them. Gates recommends inviting discipline in our lives â" replace junk food with healthy food, replace hours of couch surfing with innovative thinking and weâll eventually find our success. Give back to the worldBeing the richest man on the planet, youâd think Gates would have shunned away from philanthropy. The truth is quite the opposite. Gates and his wife, Melinda have given away more than $30 billion in charity to the âBill and Melinda Gates Foundationâ. He actively takes part in traveling the world and launching various eco-friendly projects to sustain the planet. He fully believes in the fu ture of tomorrow and consistently gives back to society what he gained from it. In part, we must do our best to give back to the planet as much as we profit from it.Be your own bossYou either work to plant a sapling in someone elseâs farm or you plant it in your own backyard. In the end, the only difference is the fact that the tree in the other personâs farm will always be his property but the one growing in your backyard will be your special creation. Taking control of your own company is a risk but Gates achieved it when he was just 13. Do you still feel a 13-year-old had a less risky path than your adult self?Be kind to nerdsThe nerd that you laughed at in school can turn out to be the richest man in the world. Gates is the living proof of this example. Think again when you think youâre superior to someone else just, by the way, they act and behave. Itâs not nice to profile someone under your own opinion and cause them distress by your hurtful words. Always be kind to pe ople.3. Stop Stopping Yourself â" Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook)Mark Zuckerberg in his teenage days was no different from your average geek, except this âambitiousâ geek had a vision. A goal to connect the world in a way that would forever revolutionize the way we interact with each other. Today, Facebook is more than a social-media platform. Itâs a way of life. Before we brush our teeth in the morning, we are checking our notification bar. Before we shut our eyes for a good nightâs rest, we take one good last peak for any missed messages from our friends. To start a platform such as this, Zuckerberg surely followed a strict set of rules to achieve his dream. Letâs look at them. You are as strong as the team with youFacebook might have been Mark Zuckerbergâs brainchild but itâs the good people that work in Facebookâs offices that we get to enjoy a seamless product. Mark Zuckerberg fully credits his team for his successful business model. To achieve success, we need to pu ll together a team that believes in our vision and is willing to sacrifice what it takes to achieve it. Remember the famous phrase â" âUnited we stand, divided we fall.âBe the CEO and proclaim itEvery single decision taken by Markâs team goes through him before it gets executed, no matter how small.Take charge of the entrepreneur in you and realize your dream, this isnât a childrenâs race. Show your team that youâre the boss around and donât let them control the interests of the company. If you have firm beliefs and you believe some of your employees donât share it. Itâs time to let them go. Thereâs no place for freeloaders on a train thatâs scheduled to run on purpose. Donât be fazed by negative opinionsBefore Mark Zuckerberg was famous, he was rejected by a girl and this rejection played a major role in his creation of âFacebookâ.Your ability to think differently is the reason you are you. If you were to copy another personâs opinion, you reflect the other personâs dream. Donât be scared to come out with ideas that may shock your colleagues and peers. The best part about being unique is that youâll initially be rejected but when they see your success, theyâll gather around you like puppets. Go big or go home The ideas that come to you are only as big as your goals are. If you set the goals to reach the peak of a mountain, youâll have reached the mountain. If you set the goal to reach the moon, you may one day find yourself strapped on a spaceship. Similarly, when Mark was first asked to reveal his end game goal, he said âconnecting the entire worldâ. This statement made his friends smirk out of surprise. Today, Mark Zuckerberg has connected about 1/3rd of the planet.4. Forget Perfection â" Eike Batista (EBX Group)Compared to the other four billionaires on this list, Eike Batista may not have the recognition that he deserves around the world, but heâs a successful role model, nonetheless. He was listed as the 8t h richest person in the world and possessed a $30 billion net worth. Thereâs ample amount of knowledge the man has that weâd like to learn. Letâs understand what life lessons make Eike Batista so successful. Be optimistic but more importantly, realisticBatista lost close to 90% of his entire net worth in 2008. Itâs almost heart wrenching to know someone could erase that amount of money due to bankruptcy. It makes you wonder if the 8th richest person in the world can find his way back on the roads, what chance do I have on this godforsaken land? Good question. The answer to this is to remain realistic and be grounded. He kept his hopes up and didnât sell his shares when they began to plummet, he eventually stuck to his stocks and made back his money when the market moved back up.Donât live on borrowed moneyBatistaâs downfall was caused due to a $5 billion debt he owed to other companies.Leverage or loans are convenient ways to recover from our losses. After all, thereâ s always a means to pay back the loans, right? Wrong! If you donât have an active business plan or a means to pay back the interest + principle, youâll end up living on borrowed money and the interest keeps growing every year. Thatâs why itâs important to never leverage more than you can handle. In fact, itâs best to live modestly for a while until you can recover your way of living.Need a strong base for your workIf the hull of a ship is weak, itâs bound to sink as soon as it hits the water. Itâs always important to strengthen the base of your work or it can be a major disaster. There will be bad days when your business is on the roads, but it takes a true character to be able to recover from that and make your way back up. 5. Fiercely Protect Your Brand â" Oprah Winfrey (The Oprah Winfrey Show)The only woman on this list and what a life Oprah Winfrey has lived. From being sexually abused as a kid to struggling to make ends meet and finally having her own successful talk show â" âThe Oprah Winfrey Showâ.Oprah Winfreyâs story is the type that would make a perfect Hollywood movie. In fact, the script is perfect except this woeful story is proof of how an individual can come out of the worst of conditions and still make it through. The great lady shares some of her life lessons that can truly show us the way out of our miseries.Donât be afraid to failWhether in life or business, failure is absolute that everyone gets to experience. Oprah failed several times when applying as a tv host. It took her several tries to land a job on a show, which eventually became the âThe Oprah Winfrey Showâ.Oprah earned $500 dollars for a speech she gave as a kid since then she harbored the dream of wanting to earn a living by speaking to an audience. As fortune would have it, today she is a billionaire and in an industry that she dreamt as a kid. You are responsible for your own lifeIf a kid like Oprah Winfrey could overcome serious issues like sexual assaults and poverty and make it into the spotlight, whatâs stopping you from achieving your dream? It doesnât matter how bad life was in the past, the only answer to this is to look towards the future and make the best you can with what you have. Donât waste time blaming others for something you werenât gifted with instead be grateful for the things youâve been blessed with. Ending bring beginningsEveryone on earth has their own unique story. Themes of Shelleys Frankenstein Essay - 1421 Words
Mary Shelley discusses the themes of birth and creation, appearance and the necessity of companionship, love and acceptance in her novel Frankenstein. The themes that are explored in Frankenstein are relevant to todayââ¬â¢s modern world. Shelley challenges readers by endorsing and confronting attitudes and values in her text through the events, circumstances and outcomes that take place in the novel, thus causing the reader to reflect upon their own lives and in turn the society around them. Shelley raises in her text an issue that is on the forefront of discussion in the modern world, that of man taking the place of God and the role of woman in the creation of life. The modern world is currently grappling over the concerns of cloning,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One of the main themes in Frankenstein is appearance and acceptance. In todayââ¬â¢s society and the society in which Frankenstein is set, people often judge one another solely based on appearance. Social prejudice is often based on looks. Be it the colour of ones skin, the clothes they wear, facial features or even ones body expressions. People make snap judgements based on what the eye beholds. Todayââ¬â¢s schools are a prime example of this as people are classified instantly and almost unknowingly. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s a lot of hate around here, Gentry Robler, 16, a sophomore at Santana High. He reels off the high school cliques: the gothics, the freaks, the dorks, the jocks, the Mexican gangsters, the white supremacists.â⬠Time March 2001 pg. 24 This example of the significance of appearance in modern society is also echoed in Frankenstein. The parallel between the society in the novel and modern society is that of snap judgements based solely on appearances. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein is a perpetrator of such judgements. Victor ââ¬Å"selected his features as beautiful.â⬠Here it is seen Victorââ¬â¢s shallowness as he picked the most perfect body parts and beauteous features, all to be pieced together in great anticipation. However as one can see, the result is horrific and due to the hideousness of the wretch that he has created, he abandons him. Amen. Actions and Consequences Free Essays
Costa-Gavraââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Amen. â⬠is a thought-provoking film that combines political thriller, suspense and expose. ââ¬Å"Amenâ⬠, translated in Hebrew as ââ¬Å"So be itâ⬠, deals with three significant characters, both real and fictional, who act out different moral or ethical principles. We will write a custom essay sample on Amen. Actions and Consequences or any similar topic only for you Order Now These characters, Father Riccardo Fontana, Kurt Gerstein and Pope Pius XII, provide the audience with different perspectives on the dilemma about the genocide of millions of Jews during World War II, commonly known as ââ¬Å"the Holocaustâ⬠. By reflecting on the lives, actions or personalities of these three characters, we would understand the ethical challenges, ethical principles and actions they have faced, considered and performed. Body Father Riccardo Fontana, played by Mathleu Kassovitz, is a junior diplomat and an idealistic Jesuit priest. Father Riccardo Fontana learned the life and sufferings of the Jews in the Nazi concentration camps (through the help of Kurt Gerstein). He also learned that the American government inquired about the genocide of Jews through a letter addressed at the Vatican. He endeavoured or tried his best to alert the Vatican about the genocide of Jews in the Nazi concentration camps. He thought that his familial connections with the local priests and at the Vatican would bring in results or considerations from the Pope. He also thought that by directly stating the problems at the Nazi concentration camps to the Pope, he would be able to bring light to the problem and have the Pope do his part by making a public statement condemning the actions of the Nazis. However, in the end, he was not able to have the support of the Vatican. He lost his life; Father Riccardo Fontana died a martyr. Father Riccardo Fontana is a fictional character in the movie; however, I believe that he symbolizes the early life of Pope Pius XII. As a morally righteous priest, I believe that he wanted to ease the pain or sufferings of the Jews. As a diplomat, I believe that he wanted to do things in a peaceful and legal manner. I also think Father Riccardo Fontana believes on deontological ethics. Deontological ethics or deontology refers to the method of applying ethics by focusing on what actions are right or wrong, regardless whether the consequences would right or not. This ethical principle is sometimes referred to as ââ¬Å"obligationâ⬠or ââ¬Å"dutyâ⬠ethics. These are the reasons why I believe, Father Riccardo Fontana tried his best to alert the Pope, make a difference or bring the Jews help from the Vatican even if it means to sacrificing his own life for the sake of duty. If I were Father Riccardo Fontana, I would also inform or alert the Vatican, particularly the Pope. I would seek his assistance regarding the genocide of Jews and strongly emphasize my point that it is wrong and immoral. I would let them see that as priests, we should do our best to preserve life and peace all throughout the world, despite the differences in race or ethnicity. I would stand for the right of my fellow Jews, especially for their right to live. However, unlike Father Riccardo Fontana, I would seek or provide other kinds of help if all of the previous acts fail. I help the Jews by hiding them from the Nazis and I will ease their pain with my prayers. Subsequently, I will continue my efforts to make the authorities do their part. I will not have myself killed, not for selfish reasons, but because I know that dying wonââ¬â¢t solve anything. If I die, I would no longer be able to help the Jews or the needy. If I die, I wonââ¬â¢t be able to strengthen their morale and keep their spirits and hopes high. On the other hand, Kurt Gerstein, played by Ulrich Tukur, is a real character or individual, greatly devoted to his duty as a soldier and religious beliefs as a Protestant. He is a German SS officer on board the Waffen-SS during the World War II. He is also an intelligent scientist and member of the Institute for Hygiene who developed the gas Zyklon B for treating or curing the waters drank and used by Nazi soldiers. As a scientist, hygienist and developer of the Zyklon B, he only wanted to prevent illnesses or the spread of diseases among the Nazi troops. Unfortunately, Zyklon B was used to exterminate the Jews. Raised in a family of patriotic officers and soldiers with strong sense of responsibility, his obedience or compliance to authority cannot be doubted. However, after learning this horrible truth, his values as a Protestant dominated his sense of patriotism. He alerted the Protestant leaders, then the authorities, Swedish diplomats and also the Roman Catholic Church about the immoral acts committed by his superiors. He took actions similar to what Father Riccardo Fontana did and just like the efforts of Father Riccardo Fontana, Gersteinââ¬â¢s efforts were in awe. Conversely, I am convinced that he believes the same ethical principles as Father Ricardo Fontana. If I were Kurt Gerstein, I would first try to reach a higher position in the Nazi party. I will do my best to reach that position as soon as possible because time is of the essence. After having power or authority, I would instantly see to it that the officers under my authority would provide help to the Jews. I would do this secretly or behind the radar of my superiors so that I can still have my power and my life for the service of those who are suffering. With my power and my life, I will provide more help or make more things morally right. Pope Pius XII, the most controversial character in the movie, is subjected to allegations of preserving his selfish-needs, economic interests, ambition and power by doing nothing regardless of knowing the horrible truth at the Nazi concentration camps. In this sense, allegedly, the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church in extension, committed passive sin. Somehow, watching the movie had made me scrutinize or contemplate on the faith and hope that I had for the Vatican or to the Pope. Putting myself in the shoes of Kurt Gerstein and Father Riccardo Fontana made me doubt that the religious authorities are not morally upright. However, considering the position of the Pope, I reclaimed my belief that he did not do anything wrong and that he only wanted greater good for a greater number of individuals or Jews in particular. As a prominent and religious leader, every action should be seriously weighed and the interests of those who are in need or prosecuted should be considered in order to prevent further harm done to them. Alerting the international public would disrupt the allegiance of the Vatican and the Nazi party and spark more tension. If the allegiance is lost and the Nazis are angered by the public statement or expose of their immoral acts, will the Vatican be able to address the retaliation of the Nazis? How can the Vatican keep Jews, provide food and shelter in chapels if the angered Nazis destroyed the Catholic chapels? Will the public statement improve the situation of the prosecuted Jews? Will it stop a possible war? I donââ¬â¢t think. This is due to the fact that the Nazi party has great military power at that time to retaliate to any threat or opposition. Public protests against this inhumane party would only increase prosecution, not only of Jews but also Roman Catholics; and that would be further agonizing. I think that as a religious leader, a morally upright Roman Catholic and diplomat, Pope Pius XII did actions behind the eye of the public to help the Jews. I believe that Pope Pius XII believes in utilitarianism and because of this. Consequently, he suffered the pain of doing nothing because he knew that the consequences would be right or provide greater good. Conclusion Father Riccardo Fontana, Kurt Gerstein and Pope Pius XII are three interesting characters with varied perspectives when it comes to what is right or wrong. Father Riccardo Fontana and Kurt Gerstein believed in fulfilling their moral obligations while Pope Pius XII believed that ââ¬Å"the end justifies the meansâ⬠. The first two characters believed in doing things now and in considering consequences later while the third character was thinking of the consequences first before making an action. Somehow, I believe that the Holocaust or the genocide of millions of Jews in Nazi concentration camps, considering these two opposite ethical principles, is a dilemma. It is a dilemma where I believe, Pope Pius XII did the best choice. Works Cited Costa-Gavras, dir. Amen. Perfs. Ulrich Tukur, Mathieu Kassovitz. Kino International, 2002. How to cite Amen. Women And Spirituality Essays - Womens Rights, Feminist Philosophy
Women And Spirituality What we find as an original response to existences meaning is the belief in a greater being or higher power, eg. God, that we serve and obey in the trade for a fruitful, everlasting life. This can be connected to the theory of the Earth-Mother. The female in nature was intended to represent reoccurring life. Ancient people held the belief that they would return to the body of the womb of mother earth and then be given a new life. This ancient belief is similar to our own when compared. The view of the religious world can give meaning and purpose to the lives of the people as it gives them hope. Hope that if they live their lives as God had intended for them, they will be granted entrance into heaven, an everlasting, peaceful place. It gives people meaning as to what they should do with their lives. The religious view also brings order in people's lives. Purpose in someone's life is also introduced in the world view; they can go to church and have the holy rituals which every religion practices. This may offer people a sense of purpose in their life. Religion cannot be contained by a certain definition because religion is, simplistically enough, what you want it to be. No one can write a definition of religion as it is really just personal opinion. Religion can be the way you live your life, but for someone else it may just be another word in their vocabulary. With the advent of the feminist movement, the role of women in all parts of society has come under increasing scrutiny. One area of recent controversy is the role of women in the Christian Church. Some churches whose traditions and practices are less rigidly tied to Biblical doctrines have begun placing women in leadership positions such as pastor or teacher. Other churches which interpret the Bible more literally have been slow to adopt such changes. Most Commentators agree that man and woman are both equally a reflection of God's image; the word man here is used as a synonym for humanity. Adam and Eve were also given joint dominion over creation. The role of the man is leadership, while the role of woman is as a source of strength and support. If a person wants to understand the Christian authority of a man over his wife, he must consider how Christ demonstrated his leadership as head over the Church. Primarily, he gave his life for his church, not using force or coercion for her submission. Many people would dispute the Bible's relevance to contemporary thought in general, and in particular to the role of women in worship. If the Bible were not written under divine inspiration, a person or practice is not bound by its teachings. He or she can therefore pick and choose whatever corresponds to his/her point of view. However, if the Bible is of divine inspiration, then a cautious consideration of passages relevant to a particular issue must be undertaken. Traditions and customs, that have arisen after the Bible was written, may thus be carefully scrutinized. Such practices may or may not prove sound after comparison with scripture. If women are not allowed to have a voice or some kind of input, the church could be loosing a valuable resource of wisdom. If a husband does not consider his wives thoughts and ideas as being important or valid, his family is surely incomplete, dysfunctional and doomed to failure. Therefore, as the church strives to realize Gods purpose for women, we must remember the truths of the scripture and apply them to our present day culture. This will allow men and women to present the Christian message to our world in the most powerful way. Feminist ethics has much to offer Catholicism. For one, the main issues that concern feminist ethics are basically the same ones that make up Catholic identity. That is, how women and men define themselves in society, what means are available to them for attaining their ends- in short inter personal and social relations. Second, the founding principles that guide feminist ethics are rooted in the tradition of natural law, a tradition well known to Catholicism. So,
